Paul
McLellan
a
retired civil servant, Paul McLellan has been promoting
backyard habitat sanctuaries for wildlife since 1985 through
the design and marketing of many educational and functional
backyard products.
Paul
has transformed his rural 30-acre property from a farm to
a bird sanctuary. Land, which had been cleared for crops,
was replanted with native trees and shrubs or left to go
back to its natural state. Perennial beds were added in
open spots for their beauty and to attract birds, butterflies,
and pollinators. Bird feeders and well placed nesting boxes
added the final touches.
to
ensure the fullest enjoyment of this wildlife haven, a trail
was developed which covers all sectors of the property.
The trail, now 5-km long, allows Paul the opportunity to
partake of his other passions, mountain biking and snowshoeing.
Paul
loves to share his dedication and enthusiasm for nature
with others. In 1999, he was the first recipient of the
Elizabeth Le Geyt Environmental Award, "chosen for his very
eclectic interest in bird house improvements, bird feeders,
wild plants, and his inspirational approach to young people
concerning all types of environmental issues."
as
an advisor to the Canadian Wildlife Federation, Paul has
given valuable input to many of our educational programs.
He has participated in the development of national educational
publications and booklets concerning wildlife and habitat.
Paul also helped create our model Golden Garden at Rideau
